From public transport to mining, tourism and hospitality – bus operators in every industry are making the transition to zero emission buses (ZEBs). For some operators, a key barrier is cost. We understand that purchasing an electric bus is a large upfront investment, which may not be practical for your business right now. But, we also recognise the benefits to making the switch sooner; from smaller environmental impacts to lower operating costs over time. At Coachair, we aim to support our customers with premium HVAC at a low cost, weight and power consumption. In this article, we’re exploring the cost benefits of running an electric fleet; including how our EX Series can help you maintain operational efficiency.

Is an electric bus affordable to run?

According to the National Transport Commission, the cost of purchasing a ZEB can be up to double the diesel equivalent. In good news, these costs are expected to come down gradually; as global supply meets demand and manufacturing technology improves. Trials around the world are also finding that bus operators can make up the difference through lower operating costs over time. For example, Victoria’s Zero Emission Bus Trial – running since 2022 – found that energy consumption from an electric bus is up to two-thirds lower than a diesel bus. Maintenance is also simpler and more cost-effective with fewer mechanical parts in batteries compared to an engine.

Supporting you with cost-effective HVAC

When you’re ready to transition, Coachair is here to help ensure a comfortable journey for every drive. Our all-electric EX range features 3 unit sizes with varied cooling capacity for 7m-14m buses. With low weight and power consumption, these units offer the lowest whole of life cost compared to similar products on the market. Our unit weight is over 50% lower than other products – allowing you to carry more passengers without exceeding legal or mechanical limits. Locally engineered, these units also offer up to 60% lower power consumption. With less drain on the battery, your vehicle can maximise distance covered and routes completed on a single charge.
